Bruce Power Alberta is proposing to build four nuclear reactors in our province. The nuclear industry has undertaken a massive media campaign to convince Albertans that nuclear power is a solution to climate change. We believe that green technologies are a better option.
The Coalition for a Nuclear Free Alberta is comprised of several regional groups that are speaking out about the risks and costs of nuclear power. Our prime concerns are:
Climate Change - Nuclear power is not the solution! Exploration, mining, milling and processing of uranium fuel, the construction of reactors, transportation of fuel, and storage of waste are all carbon intensive.
Affect on Human Health - Nuclear reactors regularly produce radioactive emissions such as tritium, cesium, strontium, and iodine that are known to increase the risk of cancer and leukemia, especially in young children. Numerous documented accidental releases have occurred - radioactive emissions are far worse than CO2 emissions.
Radioactive Nuclear Waste - With billions of taxpayer dollars invested, there is still no successful disposal solution anywhere in the world, and many radioactive substances remain hazardous for thousands of years. There are known cases of storage sites that leak contaminated materials into the soil and watersheds. Stored nuclear waste can be a target for terrorism. The Nuclear Power Expert Panel report says the management of nuclear waste will be passed to future generations to decide what to do - as technology advances.
Job Creation - Nuclear power will create some jobs, but not nearly as many jobs ascould be created by investments in renewable energy. Clean, sustainable alternatives such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, small scale hydro, and energy efficiency are safer, healthier, cheaper, create more jobs, and combat climate change more effectively. download our jobs fact sheet
Expense to Taxpayers - The federal government has subsidized the nuclear industry with billions of dollars in taxpayer money. Most nuclear facilities go significantly over budget, have abysmal efficiency rates and must undergo costly refurbishments far ahead of schedule. No nuclear power plant has ever been successfully decommissioned. The huge cost of such a task, as well as any major accident, will be borne by taxpayers.
Take Action - We call on all Albertans of principle to take the following actions to make the statement "Keep Alberta Nuclear Free" You Can Help! - Find out how - visit our Activism Resources Page
