OBJECTS OF THE COALITION FOR A NUCLEAR FREE ALBERTA
The Coalition for a Nuclear Free Alberta (CNFA) has the following objects:
- to educate and inform the public about the true risks and costs of nuclear power, uranium mining and nuclear weapons;
- to develop a library of resources on the above topics;
- to raise concerns about nuclear power, uranium mining and nuclear weapons with all levels of government;
- to participate in the regulatory process for specific proposals for nuclear power plants, uranium mining, uranium enrichment, nuclear fuel fabrication, transportation of radioactive substances, and storage and disposal of radioactive wastes;
- to educate and inform the public about the benefits of energy conservation and truly renewable energy sources;
- to promote policies at all levels of government which encourage energy conservation and truly renewable energy sources;
- to foster the development of groups throughout Alberta which share the above objects;
- to network with organizations throughout Alberta, across Canada and around the world.
CONCERNS OF THE COALITION FOR A NUCLEAR FREE ALBERTA
The Coalition for a Nuclear Free Alberta (CNFA) has the following concerns:
- CLIMATE CHANGE - the nuclear power industry is not a solution to climate change. Exploration, mining, milling and processing nuclear fuel; the construction of nuclear reactors and the transportation of radioactive fuel; and the containment and storage of nuclear waste products are all carbon-intensive activities. Nuclear power generation is neither green nor clean.
- HUMAN HEALTH -operating nuclear reactors regularly produces radioactive emissions such as tritium, cesium, strontium and iodine, all all known to increase the risk of cancer and leukemia, especially in young children. Numerous documented accidental releases have already occurred and are much more common that the nuclear industry would have you believe. There are also emissions and waste products produced at every stage of the nuclear production cycle, including mining and processing of uranium and the transportation of nuclear fuel.
- RADIOACTIVE NUCLEAR WASTE - with billions of taxpayers dollars already invested, there is still no successful disposal solution anywhere in the world. Many of the radioactive waste products produced in this industry have the potential to remain hazardous to humans and all other forms of life on our planet for thousands of years. There are known cases of "temporary" storage sites that are already leaking contaminated and highly radioactive materials into the soil, air and watersheds. Plus these nuclear waste storage facilities have the potential of becoming the targets of terrorism.
- JOB CREATION - the development of nuclear will produce some jobs, but not nearly as many safe, sustainable, desirable and green jobs that would be produced by similar investments into renewable energy initiatives. Clean sustainable alternatives such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, small scale hydro and energy efficiency projects are safer, healthier, will create more jobs and effectively combat climate change. The CNFA supports research, investment and development of green, clean alternative and renewable energy power generation.
- EXPENSE TO TAXPAYERS - our federal government has subsidized the nuclear industry with billions of dollars of taxpayers money. Most nuclear facilities go way over budget during construction, have abysmal efficiency rates and must go through terribly expensive refurbishments years ahead of schedule. Not even one nuclear power plant has ever been successfully decommissoned. The huge costs (billions of dollars for each plant) of decommissioning nuclear plants, as well as any major accident will also be paid by taxpayers.
